In today’s research environment, the responsible handling of personal information is not just good practice—it is a legal and ethical obligation. Whether you’re conducting clinical trials, social research, or working within academic institutions, understanding how to manage privacy risks is essential for protecting participant rights and maintaining public trust.
PRAXIS Australia’s Privacy in Research virtual workshop offers a comprehensive, practical introduction to the core principles of privacy and data protection, with specific relevance to the research sector. This course is designed for professionals who handle personal or sensitive data and need a solid understanding of privacy obligations under Australian law and ethical frameworks.
Why Privacy Training Is Essential for Researchers
Privacy breaches in research don’t just damage reputations—they can result in serious legal and regulatory consequences. Increasingly, research projects involve the collection, use, and sharing of identifiable information, including health data, biospecimens, and digital records. With tightening legislation and heightened public awareness around data use, researchers are expected to apply best practices in privacy management throughout the lifecycle of a project.
This workshop empowers attendees to:
-
Understand privacy laws and their relevance to research (including the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles)
-
Identify privacy risks in research design and data handling
-
Apply practical strategies for ensuring compliance and ethical data use
-
Build participant trust through transparency and accountability
Whether you’re working on ethics applications, managing databases, or engaging with human research participants, this training provides critical skills to support responsible, compliant research practices.
